In 2013, the world fell in love with , a "home-free" hitchhiker who became an overnight hero after saving a woman from a violent attack. The internet couldn't get enough of his eccentric charm and his now-iconic "smash, smash, suh-mash" interview. But as the Netflix documentary The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker reveals, his rise to fame was followed by a chilling downward spiral. The Legend of the "Hatchet Hero"
The story began in Fresno, California, when the man Kai was hitchhiking with intentionally drove into a utility worker. When the driver then attacked a bystander who tried to help, Kai pulled a hatchet from his backpack and struck the assailant to stop him.
