The story begins in 1958 in Centerville, Illinois, where extraterrestrial beings land and abduct the entire population, taking over their bodies and keeping the town frozen in a 1950s time warp. Twenty-five years later, Charles Bigelow (Paul Le Mat), a university professor, travels to the town to find his ex-wife, Margaret (Diana Scarwid), who disappeared after attending her mother's funeral there.

Charles discovers the town is populated by these disguised aliens, who have a diabolical plan and pursue him when he attempts to leave.
