I hadn't even dropped my bags when the first sound reached me: a heavy, rhythmic thud-drag-thud echoing through the hallway. "Hello?" I called out, my voice trembling.
The invitation to Eagle Junior High’s summer camp had promised "friendship and spiritual growth," but as the heavy iron gates of the school groaned shut behind me, the air turned cold. The brochure hadn't mentioned the boarded-up windows or the smell of damp stone.
As she prowled the room, I saw a glint of porcelain on the floor—a piece of a broken mask. The legends were true. To get out, I wouldn't just need to run; I’d have to piece together the mask and uncover the secret Sister Madeline was so desperate to keep buried in these halls.
I didn't wait for a greeting. I bolted down the corridor, the sound of her heavy boots and the whistle of that hammer cutting through the air right behind me. I dove into a classroom, sliding under a dusty desk just as she shattered the door frame.
A shadow stretched across the floor, long and jagged. Out of the darkness stepped Sister Madeline. She didn't look like any nun I’d ever seen. Her habit was tattered, her eyes were twin pits of madness, and in her gnarled hands, she gripped a massive, blood-stained wooden hammer.
I held my breath, watching her hammer drag across the floorboards inches from my hiding spot. The game had truly begun.
